Saul | WarbossKurgan
The decrepit fort squatted along the Flaywild’s jagged shores and mutated trees like a bloated tick.
Krehmicto watched it from beneath the tangled canopy, golden eyes narrowing as crimson torchlight flickered across rotting palisades and iron-spiked battlements. The fort had once belonged to another people long dead and forgotten even by the Sunblood’s reckoning. Now crude brass icons of Khorne hung from its walls beside headless corpses and drying hides, the fort’s more recent occupants before the newest would-be warlord’s arrival.
The sight of Chaos consuming even itself sickened the old saurus to her stomach, her lips peeling back into a sharp-toothed snarl that was anything but cold and calculating. The ancient Sunblood strode from the forest’s edge alone, an aeonfire blade resting across her shoulder.
One arm. Scarred scales. A body marred by centuries of war.
The fort erupted in laughter.
“There she is!” an orruk roared from the wall. “Da cripple-lizard!”
“Send your warlord,” she snarled, her tongue and lips gnashing every word. “Unless they be too craven to face me?”
The gates groaned open on abused hinges and the Khornate warboss emerged. Massive even for an orruk, he wore jagged brass armour stained with blood, his tusks capped in iron. Around him marched a retinue of rune-scarred brutes while two daemonic maw-gruntas strained against heavy chains, roaring and frothing. Kruleboyz leveled poisoned crossbows and larger killbows down at her from walls and enormous branches alike.
The warboss laughed.
“Why’z I fightin’ a cripple?” he barked. “Youz aint worth no glory, skull’s not even fit for my gruntas! You just come ‘ere ta die, lizard”
“Rumours claimed there was a weakling here,” she retorted. “Hot bellows disguised as a sack of useless meat.”
Krehmicto rolled one shoulder, her alien smile widening.
“Looks like they were right.”
The laughter turned to thunder as the orruk roared and charged.
His axe hammered against her blade with enough force to pulp a human outright. Krehmicto gave ground immediately, tail lashing for balance as another brutal strike clipped her shoulder and hurled her sideways through the mud.
The warboss roared triumphantly, and his horde cheered him on as they watched with rapt attention.
Krehmicto rose slowly, blood dripping from fresh cracks in old scars. The orruk came again—headbutts, elbows, kicks, savage blows without discipline or restraint. She absorbed them all, staggering and giving ground under his relentless advance.
A weaker warrior would have died ten times already, but she endured as all the corrupt orruks looked on their battle and jeered.
A kruleboy on the wall twitched once before silent steel whispered into his heart. Another vanished backward into the canopy, dragged into darkness before he could scream. Undead horrors climbed upside-down across branches, hauling archers away one by one. Chameleon skinks struck with poisoned darts while pale aelves slit throats with ritual precision.
The clang of metal and the warboss’ booming laughter ensured none heard them fall.
It continued as Krehmicto yielded more and more ground, until she simply stopped. The Sunblood parried his next blow, the earth exploding where his blood-thirsty axe buried itself. The orruk reared back his head to deliver another bone-crushing headbutt, only to find jaws tearing open his exposed throat. His surprise only lasted a heartbeat, her powerful tail breaking bone as it slammed into his knee.
The corrupt warboss stumbled backward, weapons flailing to keep the advancing lizard at bay. Krehmicto spat out tainted blood and attacked. She circled him, her footwork economical, her strikes precise, and the battle humiliating.
One arm still more than enough.
The warboss bellowed in fury as she batted aside every strike, kicks and tail sweeps breaking his rhythm apart. Around them, his warriors began shouting and stomping. Fingers twitched towards triggers on crossbows and killbows levelled at her.
Khorne’s worshippers were many things, but patient was not one of them.
One Kruleboy snarled and pulled his trigger.
A terradon screamed from above, Tlaxi’Xol’s crescent blade flashing once. The archer’s head spun from his shoulders and before it even hit the ground his mates joined him in death. Kruleboyz toppled from the wall, corpses spilling into the mud below.
The warboss spun toward the slaughter.
“Treachery!” he roared. “You aint got no hono—”
Krehmicto’s blade punched through his back and burst from his chest in a spray of black blood.
“You know not the meaning of honour,” she hissed into his ear. “You craven slave.”
The blade withdrew and he collapsed forward, clawing weakly through the mud as his retinue unleashed the maw-gruntas.
The daemonic beasts thundered toward her.
Krehmicto calmly cleaned blood from her blade.
A monstrous orruk hit the ground like a meteor, his enormous bone greatsword cleaving through the lead maw-grunta’s neck in a single strike.
The second beast squealed as harpoons slammed into its flesh. Idoneth riders surged from the trees atop snarling allopexes, dragging the creature sideways into waiting Fyreslayer axes hidden in the shadows.
The Khornate Chosen charged and a tide of fanatics surged from the rancid waters to meet them. Priests strode at the front of the penal legion, singing shanty-prayers through cracked lips as divine light surged across zealots, lepers, and condemned killers alike. Improvised weapons and rusted blades dragged the hulking orruks down beneath sheer zealous fury. Shivs punched through visor gaps. Hammers broke knees. Yellowed teeth tore throats.
“Chain by chain and scar by scar, Sigmar guide us through the dark!” The priests led them in song. “From flooded hull to blood-soaked shore, let us earn one sunrise more!”
The enemy broke and their wounded warboss crawled back through the gates, the survivors slamming them shut behind him.
The orruk sharpened his monstrous bone sword thoughtfully.
“Lettin’ him live’s cruel,” the young orruk muttered in a thick duardin accent. “Those seekers don’t like it when relics get nicked first.”
“I only repaid the would-be warlord’s hospitality in kind,” Krehmicto replied, clapping him on the shoulder in a gesture alien to most cold-blooded Seraphon. “They can do what they like to the enemy, as long as they get results.”
The gate exploded inward.
Duardin sappers scattered back into cover as screams erupted from within the fort. Vampires, treasure seekers, and robe-clad wizards poured upward from tunnels beneath the keep, cutting through panicked defenders to ‘liberate’ the cultural relics and ancient artefacts in their possession.
“Worry about yourself and your comrades,” Krehmicto said, injecting as much ‘warmth’ as she could into her words to off-set how she gnashed them. “The enemy will show you even less mercy than we showed them here.”
“Aye, Commander,” the orruk grunted. “Guess the day is ours.”
Krehmicto sheathed her blade.
“No,” she corrected. “Today the enemy learned the night does not belong to them.”
She walked forward, gesturing as she gave commands.
“Penitents, sweep the fort then secure those ships! Rangers, only a few witnesses escape with their lives to spread word! Hunters, hunt and salvage these beasts for armaments! Delvers, strip this place clean! We move before this hell’s forsaken moon falls!”
The Starfall Devils obeyed without hesitation.
Penitents flushed survivors into waiting ambushes. Rangers stalked fleeing enemies through the trees like hunting cats. Hunters butchered monsters for trophies and wargear. Delvers ripped apart fortified positions and vaults alike with ‘archaelogical’ explosives while wizards looted forbidden tomes from beneath the keep.
Before long, what passed for silence reclaimed the Flaywilds.
Broken only by the dry crackling of pyres, the wet sound of knives harvesting monster parts, the crunch of crowbars prying loot free, and the screams of enemies facing execution or interrogation.
With the battle in hand, one of the artistically inclined used blood and soot to paint the haloed, horned figure that had come to represent their grizzled band.
When the light of Hysh crept through the scabrous haze tainting all of Eightpoints, there was only dust and ash where there had once stood a manned fortress. Nothing was left for the enemy to reclaim—and the Starfall Devil grinned down upon the ruin that was wrought.
